Ever wondered how translators manage to turn messy sentences into clear meaning? Or how interpreters listen, think, and talk all at once?
This workshop is a not-so-boring dive into the real techniques, shortcuts and thought processes behind effective translation and interpretation.
THE WORKSHOP
THE DETAILS*
Led by Shaghaph Qadrieyh, a professional translator and interpreter with over 6 years of experience working with UN agencies, NGOs, cultural organisations and international research teams, this session takes you behind the scenes of how languages actually work in real life. You’ll learn what to pay attention to when translating, how to adapt tone and meaning for different audiences, and why good translation is more about decision-making than dictionary-searching.
We’ll explore practical skills like how to approach a new text, how to avoid common mistakes, how to think like a translator, and how to creatively solve “untranslatable” phrases. You’ll also get a peek into the world of interpretation through a simple introduction to shorthand note-taking, the quick symbols interpreters rely on to keep up with fast speech.
This two-hour workshop is hands-on, interactive, and beginner-friendly. No previous experience is required, only curiosity and a love of language. Expect mini translation challenges, note-taking games, and real examples from humanitarian, creative, and everyday content.
By the end of the workshop, you will:
leave with practical tools you can use immediately, whether you're bilingual, studying languages, or simply fascinated by how meaning travels from one language to another.
Why the Boring Workshops?
This aren’t pre-recorded courses. They’re live online workshops with professional instructors and creatives where you can ask questions, receive feedback, get personal guidance, and interact with peers in real time.
Recording are made available after the session so you can rewatch and follow at your own pace.
MEET Shaghaph
Shaghaph Qadrieyh is a bilingual translator and interpreter with over six years of experience working across humanitarian, cultural and international fields. Her work has taken her from translating interviews for UNRWA and UNICEF-related initiatives, to subtitling for theatre institutions like Zoukak, to interpreting live conferences for international foundations. She’s handled everything from NGO reports and donor interviews to creative videos, policy documents and high-level market research projects for global brands.
Shaghaph is passionate about sharing the real, practical side of translation - the part you only learn through experience. She loves helping others understand how translators think, decide and create meaning between languages. She’s especially interested in showing people that translation is more than finding the “right word.” It’s problem-solving, creativity, cultural awareness and sometimes even emotional intelligence.
