THE WORKSHOP

This is a live session is designed to give you a clear, in-depth understanding of the cyanotype process from start to finish. Each step will be demonstrated using pre-prepared materials, allowing you to see the full workflow—from mixing the chemistry to exposing and developing prints—without waiting for drying or exposure times. You’ll be able to: Watch each stage of the process clearly, with close-up demonstrations Learn practical tips, creative variations, and troubleshooting advice Ask questions in real time and get direct answers Take notes and prepare to try the process later at your own pace This format is ideal if you prefer to focus on learning first, then experiment with confidence afterward. A complete materials list and process summary will be provided so you can easily recreate the steps on your own after the workshop.

Join Josefa for a live, workshop where she will show you how to create beautiful blue-and-white prints using the historic cyanotype process. This session is designed to show you each step, from start to finish, so you can confidently explore this alternative photographic technique on your own.

What we’ll cover during the workshop:

  • Introduction to Cyanotype: A brief history of the process and its applications in art and photography.

  • Materials & Preparation: Overview of the chemistry, safety guidelines, and tools you’ll need.

  • Coating the Paper or Fabric: Learn how to evenly apply the sensitizer and prepare your surface for exposure.

  • Composition & Exposure: Arrange your objects (botanicals, transparencies, or found items) and expose them using sunlight or a UV lamp.

  • Developing the Print: We’ll go through the washing and drying process.

  • Creative Possibilities: Discussion of toning, layering, and experimenting beyond the basics.

You’ll be able to ask questions in real time and get feedback throughout the session. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your technique, this workshop will give you the knowledge and confidence to continue experimenting with cyanotype on your own.

MEET JOSEFA

Josefa Searle is a Chilean artist based in Lisbon, with a background in Architecture and the Aesthetics of Photography from universities in Chile, Milan, and London. Her work explores the relationship between bodies and space, as well as the layered temporality of photographic practice. Her work has been exhibited in Chile, Portugal, England, and Poland, in solo and group shows as well as art fairs. Currently, Josefa is developing a hybrid practice that combines digital, analogue, and traditional methods—including cyanotypes printed on marble in her Lisbon studio.
