A workshop on exploring abandoned spaces and collective memory with Bored Peach Club artist-in-residence Xinyu Li
The Workshop
This 1.5-hour in-person workshop is grounded in an academically informed lens, and the psychological displacement triggered by decay and rethinks how ruins mediate relationships between the city, memory, and heritage-making, without romanticising them or turning them into objects of sensational looking.
The Details
Participants are invited to share personal encounters with demolition, former homes, diaspora, and urban exploration, then translate these experiences into paper-based outputs, such as writing, drawing, and collage. Working with foil papers as a primary material, participants will engage in a tactile process of pressing, marking, and inscribing surfaces. The foil, easily creased and responsive to touch, functions as a fragile recording surface, capturing traces, pressure, and interruption. Its reflective and disposable qualities further echo the temporal, unstable nature of ruins, allowing participants to materially explore themes of decay, memory, and transformation. All contributions will be gathered into a small collective archive, displayed as a pop-up exhibition and developed into a themed zine publication.
Workshop materials will include foil papers, drawing materials, cutting boards and tools. Participants are welcome to bring photographs, texts, illustrations, or any other objects related to their own memories or to ruins. They are encouraged to integrate their personal experiences into the foil-based making process.
